DAVID MCMILLAN | Writer, Producer. Speaker on An Evening with Netflix
Screenwriter, playwright and filmmaker David McMillan serves as Supervising Producer and writer on the Netflix limited series Dahmer -- Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which is currently the second most-watched series in Netflix’s history. His highly praised and critically acclaimed episode “Silenced” has been called “one of the most heartbreaking episodes of 2022," as it shines a powerful light on the BIPOC victims and presents them with dignity and compassion. McMillan is currently in development on several additional television and film projects with Netflix. In 2021, he co-produced and wrote for the Showtime limited series Dexter: New Blood.
McMillan has been fortunate to work with and develop television shows with some of Hollywood’s most notable producers, including Ryan Murphy, Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Discovery), Will Packer (Girls Trip), Clyde Phillips (Dexter) and Carlton Cuse (Lost).
His additional writing credits include Sleepy Hollow, Lucifer and Locke & Key.
On the film side, in 2021 McMillan finished writing an untitled project for Paramount Players and Viola Davis’ JuVee Productions, and is currently developing a feature film for Warner Brothers/Discovery and Bradley Cooper’s production company. He also wrote the feature script Signal Hill, about famed attorney Johnnie Cochran, which was recently optioned.
In theater, McMillan’s play Watching O.J., a searing look at the 1995 O.J. Simpson trial from multiple points of view, had a successful and critically acclaimed run at Ensemble Studio Theatre/LA, earning him a Stage Raw Award for Best Achievement in Playwriting.
McMillan is an alumnus of the Disney/Fox Writing Program and the CBS Diversity Writers’ Initiative. A Los Angeles native, McMillan grew up in Inglewood and attended Crossroads School in Santa Monica, where he performed in a variety of plays and musicals. He continued to pursue his love for the performing arts at Yale, where he earned his BA in English. McMillan achieved his MFA in Production at USC, during which time he won several awards for his work, including the Jack Nicholson Screenwriting Prize, USC’s top prize for screenwriting.
McMillan is deeply passionate about civil rights and social justice, and serves as a proud volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters. He currently resides in Los Angeles.
